Welcome to the winter paradise on the sunny side of the Alps! Slovenians are an active nation and we know how to enjoy the cold part of the year. The white mountains are amazingly beautiful and they offer so many great activities: alpine skiing, hiking & mountaineering, ski touring, ice climbing, cross-country skiing, sledding etc... Visit Slovenia in winter! It's unforgettable.
The Winter season in Slovenia goes from December until March, however, the snow in the highest mountains stays until June.
Alpine skiing in Slovenia
Slovenian ski resorts are small if you compare them to Austrian or Italian resorts. But they are cute, the price is acceptable and they have many good terrains for making your first turns on skis. Krvavec, Vogel, and Kanin have the nicest views, Cerkno has excellent wide slopes for practicing your carving technique and Kranjska Gora has practically everything - steep terrains for World Cup races, gentle slopes for beginners, and the liveliest off-piste happening. Don't forget about Maribor and Rogla in the eastern part of Slovenia.
I always give an honest answer to everyone who asks me about skiing holidays in Slovenia: if you are an experienced skier and you want to ski as much as possible - Don't come to Slovenia! But if you want to combine skiing with some winter hiking tours, have fun on the sleds, try ice-climbing, ski-touring, or visit a frozen waterfall - in this case, Slovenia will surely impress you with a marvelous landscape and many things to do in such a small area.
Winter hiking & ski touring in Slovenia
Slovenian mountains offer a wide variety of winter ascents for everyone. Do you want an easy morning hike or a demanding mountaineering ascent - we have it all! The Slotrips team enjoys winter especially and we have prepared a list of recommended winter tours in the Slovenian mountains.
Kranjska Gora region is the liveliest in winter. Apart from alpine skiing you can do practically everything Slovenian winter has to offer. The mountain views are amazing, there are many mountain cottages (which are open during winter as well) and the accommodation & apre-ski offer is the best.
Bovec and Bohinj are also very nice choices and a lot quieter than Kranjska Gora. Bohinj has (apart from Vogel ski resort) a very nice & small local piste for children, good cross-country tracks are arranged, hiking and ski-touring possibilities are endless. Another excellent option for winter holidays is the absolutely amazing Logar valley.
Cerkno and Pohorje (Rogla) are a good choice for family winter holidays, however, the mountain views are not as spectacular.
Why not spend your winter holidays in Ljubljana? Visit the Christmas market, marvel at the numerous lights, and make some day trips to the mountains. Krvavec ski resort is only 20 minutes by car from Ljubljana!
