How to get there:
Leave the 'Ljubljana – Koper' motorway on exit Črni Kal. Follow the main road and after 2 kilometers on an »Y« crossroad turn left towards Sočerga or Buzet. Follow the signposts for Sočerga and drive through Kubed and Gračišče villages. At the start of Sočerga village leave the main road and turn sharply to the left (small signpost for St. Kvirin). A narrow road ascends through a pine forest to a church where you park.
Description:
From the church of St. Kvirin (I also noticed the names Kvirik, Kirik and Kirk) go towards south-east on a marked hiking path. Follow the markings and walk in the same direction on the top of the ridge. There should be no problem with orientation. The path descends slowly and after about half an hour you come to a summit of Veli Badin above the edge of the walls. Carry on in the same direction and after another half an hour the path turns back completely and leads you to a description board next to an interesting stone arch (natural bridge). You will already see the rock shelters from here. You can go closer to them and feel the specialy warm micro-climate that is created below the walls. The wall-shapes, its stalactites and various color are truly intriguing. A part of the path takes place near the edge of a precipitous wall, so be careful with children!
Warning:: Endangered birds nest in the walls. Read the information on the description board and please follow the instructions. Climbing is forbidden in the walls! Return to the starting point at St. Kvirin on the same path.
The trip can be done throughout the year. On summer days it can be hellishly hot, and it is the most beautiful in the fall when the colors of tree-leaves are most intense.
