River Drava, once an important traffic vessel and bathing spot and these days the soul of the city, flows through Maribor. On its left bank is the oldest part of the city, Lent, where numerous famous buildings and, of course, the pride of the city the oldest vine in the world; are located. It is supposed to have over 400 years and gives yearly around 50 kilograms of symbolic harvest, that is generally used for official gifts. The vine is “leaning” on The Old Vine House - a tourist-information and exhibition facility, where you will find out everything about viticulture and wine tradition of the region.

If we move away from Drava a bit, we come to the pretty 'Glavni trg' square with the town hall and an interesting Plague Memorial. It was built after overcoming the plague that was fatal for a third of the city’s inhabitants in the 17th century. 'Upwards' from 'Glavni trg' the pedestrian zone spreads out. Past Slomšek's Cathedral (if we arrange in advance we can climb onto the panoramic platform of its church tower) take a stroll to the nice triangular 'Grajski Trg' square. Maribor castle with its Regional Museum Maribor stands here and on the other side of the castle (on 'Trg Svobode' square) is the next demonstration of region's connection with wine - Vinag wine cellar. In its 2 km long underground tunnels, over 5 million liters of wine is stored. It is certainly worth a visit but call in advance.

Perhaps you are also interested in Maribor Art Gallery, a Jewish synagogue, a Franciscan church or simply a walk along numerous narrow streets and sitting around in one of the lively pubs. Maribor’s 'Mestni' park is only a few-minute-walk away from Lent towards north. Behind it we can continue to the small hills of Kalvarija, Mestni Vrh or Piramida. As soon as we leave the city streets, we find ourselves among gorgeous vineyards and are also rewarded with a beautiful view.

Maribor is an extremely “sporty” city. It actually has a ski resort on the verge of the city, we can start wonderful cycling tours already in the center itself, there is an adrenaline park, a summer sledding ground, “bike park” and unlimited possibilities for walks around green Pohorje hills. On the other side of town endless vineyards (which you will enjoy the most on two wheels) spread out. In addition there are still the proverbial hospitality of local people, great food and superb wine.

What about events? The most famous are certainly the Golden Fox (women’s World Cup competition in Alpine skiing) and the unique Festival Lent. Maribor truly comes to live during that time; it is full of concerts, theater, opera and dance performances, workshops for children etc.

You will find plenty of useful information on the official website of Maribor.
