How to get there:
You can either park in Kranjska Gora, by any of the ski pistes in Podkoren, at the border crossing in Rateče or under the ski jumps in Planica. Although there is plenty of space to park, it gets crowded on sunny winter weekends.
Description:
The cross-country skiing equipment rental office and shop at the former border crossing in Rateče is becoming the center of this sport in the Kranjska Gora region. You can rent the gear here or arrange guided lessons. The tracks wind across the flat terrain with some short ascends and descends (track 3 on the enclosed picture).
If you are looking for a more persistently sloping track, ascend up towards the ski jumps in Planica and into the wonderful Tamar valley. This ascent will surely make you sweat some more, but the effort is worth it. A lunch and some hot tea in the warm mountain hut and the fantastic mountain environment await you in Tamar. The track from Rateče to Tamar is about 7 km long and ascends for 260 m (tracks 4 and 5).
There are some more tracks running from Rateče past Podkoren to Kranjska Gora. The terrain is mostly flat, along the ski slopes and includes a few breaks when the track crosses roads or ski pistes (track 2).
A 1 km long circular track that is lit up during the night is located on a large meadow between the Kranjska Gora center and the main road to Rateče (track 1).
