Ski terrains of Mariborsko Pohorje start practically on the verge of Maribor. Just a few minutes from the second largest Slovenian city we find ourselves in the midst of the lush Pohorje forests, which are criss-crossed with ski slopes of all levels. The ski resort divides into “Maribor” part where the world's best female skiers compete every year at the Golden Fox cup, and “Ruše” part (Areh) where less difficult terrains predominate including the new incredible slope 'Pisker' with a modern 6-seater chairlift. Most of the wide accommodation selection is concentrated on the Maribor side – by the foot of the cable-car (actually in Maribor city) and on top of it (Bolfenk or Bellevue, 1050 m high). Mariborsko Pohorje is constantly developing and becoming an interesting active tourist center for all seasons.
How to get there:
We can drive with Maribor’s city bus to the lower station of the cable-car, but if you have your own ride there are plenty of sign boards around the city that direct you to the slopes. It is also possible to ascend by car to the upper station of the cable-car and Areh: drive from Maribor towards Hoče where we turn towards Pohorje. The road begins to ascend and approximately 11 km higher we reach the crossroad where the road splits towards Areh or Bellevue. There are 4 more km to both starting points.
Ski resort description:
As already mentioned the ski resort actually constits of two parts. The main advantage of the Maribor part is a long modern cable-car and terrains which will satisfy all kinds of skiers. The world cup race polygon is located here, at the top of the cable-car is a ski kindergarden, ski schools and equipment rentals are available and the catering facilities are spread all over the ski slopes. If there is enough snow and all slopes are operating, you will have a great time skiing here. The cable-car is operating at night as well and as much as 10 km of slopes are lighted.
The Areh or Ruše part is at a higher altitude and usually has more snow. A new acquisition of this part is a wonderful slope 'Pisker' which is long, wide and enables amazing curves and polishing of your carving technique. Areh has a children’s polygon, ski school and other tourist facilities too. Cross-country skiing trails are neat and regularly maintained.
Both parts of the ski resort are linked with lifts ('Partizanka' and 'Videc') which are otherwise rarely visited but the slopes next to them are good. Other (linking) slopes between Bellevue (Maribor) and Areh are flat and occasionally demand a little bit of pushing. If you want to avoid that, there is a free ski bus that operates between Areh and cable-car station at Bellevue. Both parts of the ski resort have a short sledding area, there are several options for strolling.
